Remembrances of Union Grove School

by Betty (Scott) Maul, July 2011

Submitted by Kathleen

Hi,

I'm sitting here talking with my mother-in-law, Betty Maul (nee Scott)
born 11/5/1921 and she was remembering her youth.  I found your
website.

Betty attended Union Grove school through third grade.  Her older
brother, Thomas,  was a senior in high school when she started first
grade.  Her next older brother was Robert (Bob) and he was four years
younger than her oldest brother.  Her oldest brother gave her a ride
to school when she was in first grade, even when the roads were bad
because of a lot of snow.  After she finished third grade, the
students from the one room school were bused into Lexington.  The
school then closed.  She remembers that there were eight buses, each
from an are previously served by a one room school house.

I read her the name of Clarence Griebling.  She says he had two
sisters, both younger, named Helen and Marie.  She says Doris Calver
lived on Hanley Road and had two sisters, Donna and Ruby Calver.

She also remembers that her teacher drove a car and would pick her up
on the way to school before the buses began.

The school was heated with a metal, good-sized stove and the teacher
had to build the fire because there was no janitor.  At the time she
attended, the school went though 8th grade.  The 8th grade boys would
feed the fire throughout the day.

She also remembers other students, Evelyn, Lucille and Richard Banks.

She remembers that they had pie socials in which every family baked a
pie and they all met in the school house and they raffled the pies.

I don't know if any of this information is helpful, but I thought I
would share it.
